Here at 43 Clicks North, we work with colleges to give students a feel for what life is like in our field. We also feel its important for students to have a viable opportunity to become employed when their studies finish, and give them a helping hand into a job.
Working with local education providers is strategically important to 43; we want the best talent to stay within Hull and by giving them a taster of what like might be like post education, were helping to do that.
My name is Melissa Brierley (Mel) and I am a first year student at Wyke SFC. I study Business, Media and Psychology A levels and enjoy being creative and expressing myself. When I was younger, I wanted to be an engineer and had a passion for maths but I quickly realised it wasn’t for me as I enjoy working with people and being even more creative. So, when I started Wyke I started to look at other options and I found a passion for marketing. This meant I could create a story about someone’s passion and sell it to the world.
At Wyke I have joined the Media Hub and started to work with a team of other students to share stories over social media (I specialise in sport). I have also attended a day at Hull Uni to work on a brief set as a competition where I worked with a team of people to come up with a product and an advertising campaign. My media teacher told us that a marketing firm was coming in to do a talk and I knew I had to go! This is when I met Steve and his team. He spoke briefly about what they get up to at the firm and I was instantly intrigued. After the talk I asked if it would be possible to do some work experience over the summer and Steve told me to get in-touch. So I did!
My first day at 43CN was brilliant I really enjoyed it. The team were welcoming and lovely and they all had a smile on their faces. I started the day off by talking to Steve in more detail as to what their business get up to. All the different areas seemed very interesting I was particularly interested in the Digital PR and the Paid Social.
I was then shown one of the clients they work with and their website, even though I am not the companies target audience I was still interested to see how this all worked. I reviewed the website on both mobile and laptop and found that they looked slightly different but were still both very good. I the spoke to Andy about what I had found, he then showed me how he creates them. I was then given a login to a site which allowed me to manipulate and create changes/posts on a draft website for 43CN. I really enjoyed this as it meant I could be creative, and I used photoshop to create my own images and backgrounds for text and posts (its defiantly a work in progress 😊) this all links to my Media A level as I am designing a website of my own to go with a magazine I have created.
I also had fun on my lunch break as some members of the team took me to the Trinity Market which I had never been to before (Instagram worthy place the food was amazing). The whole day was a great experience, and I cannot wait for day 2!
Day 2 was great I was introduced to SEO marketing, I feel like this is what I really want to do. The way all the parts interlink with each other is interesting because it makes you realise how much creativity links with strategy and technicalities of a webpage. I have worked with a different group of people today and it is lovely to see how they all work together and how much their different jobs interlink.
I have noticed on a few of the team’s laptops it says “strengths in numbers” and as a company they seem to really stick by this as they all get on so well and are able to communicate ideas and understand one and other. This is starting to sound like a review of 43CN but I feel this is a major part of my experience as they have all been amazing not only in the work place on a professional level but also on a personal level with getting to know me and understand why I want to do marketing and what interests me outside of college.
I also met another member of this team who I have got on with very well. The very special Nelly the Black Labrador who also puts a smile on everybody’s face. I have had 2 very different days so far but I have really enjoyed both and cannot wait for day 3.
Day 3 has also been great. Today I was introduced to the paid social and the organic content advertising and what is included in this. I love how creative and how interesting it is to research these areas. I have been tasked with researching the gaming community and what they want from their consoles and PCs. I am not a gamer, but it has been interesting to learn about what they do and want from the marketing and the companies they buy from.
Creativity I would say is my strong point this is probably why I have got on with socials so well and it includes things from photography to the wording and persuasiveness of the context. I also sat in on a weekly meeting this afternoon and it was interesting to understand what this business gets up to on a weekly basis. They also had a feedback section to this meeting which allowed members of the team to support and congratulate other members on their hard work during the week. The last 3 days have given me a major insight to life in the marketing world but also into the way of life in a agency. I want to say thank you to everyone who has welcomed me in and I hope in the future I will see you all again.
